14:00 - 16.09.2024
Chau Cave – Khe Nuoc Trong is a natural reserve that nature has bestowed upon Quang Binh province. The land is associated with the heroic historical feats of the West Ho Chi Minh trail. Here, the harmony of Khe Nuoc Trong primeval forest, Rao Chan River, along with mountains over 1000 m high and a variety of flora and fauna create a beautiful natural picture. This will be a future destination for tourism development associated with nature in the South of Quang Binh province.

Chau Cave – Khe Nuoc Trong – The forest of hope
Located in the Trung Truong Son mountain range, in the southwest of Quang Binh province, in Le Thuy district, about 70 km northwest of Dong Hoi city, bordering Bac Huong Hoa Nature Reserve in Quang Tri province, Laos to the west, 40 km east of the East Sea. Chau cave – Khe Nuoc Trong Nature Reserve is affectionately called “Forest of Hope” by experts and scientists.

Biodiversity area
The nature reserve is a primeval tropical forest with a coverage of over 98% and high biodiversity. This area is considered by international nature conservation organizations to be very important for biodiversity conservation. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) considers this area one of the 200 biodiversity centers in the world (Global 200, WWF 2000). BirdLife International considers it one of the 62 important and endemic bird areas of Vietnam (BirdLife International 2002). The authors’ biogeographical views all agree that this is an important area for biodiversity in Vietnam and globally.

Along with the natural beauty, the Rao Chan River, Khe Nuoc Trong in the Chau cave – Khe Nuoc Trong forest area with clear water flowing between the forested mountains, has created a poetic beauty for this place. In the primeval tropical forest, according to initial survey data, 1,030 species in 599 genera, belonging to 144 families in 5 branches of vascular plants, of which 36 species are at risk of extinction listed in the Vietnam Red Book.

Regarding animals, there are 357 species of terrestrial vertebrates; including: 76 species of mammals, 214 species of birds and 67 species of reptiles and amphibians. The total of 76 species of animals recorded in the Chau cave – Khe Nuoc Trong area include all the animal species typical of the Northern Truong Son region recorded through direct surveys or camera trap results, including many endangered and rare animals that need to be preserved such as: Red-shanked douc langur, Ha Tinh langur, Siki gibbon, Little slow loris, Striped rabbit, Javan pangolin, Asiatic black bear, Truong Son muntjac, Large muntjac, Saola, Serow, etc. Compared to other conservation areas and national parks in Vietnam, the richness of animal species in the Chau cave – Khe Nuoc Trong Nature Reserve is still very high.

Nature reserve
In 2020, Chau cave – Khe Nuoc Trong Area was honored to be established as a Nature Reserve. Becoming a Nature Reserve is an important milestone marking the transformation of Chau cave – Khe Nuoc Trong Forest in economic development in general, and tourism and service development orientation in particular. After becoming a Nature Reserve, the Management Board of the Nature Reserve hopes to receive attention from many aspects of domestic and international organizations and individuals. The flora and fauna system will continue to be discovered with many new species attracting tourists to visit, explore, and conduct scientific research, and more and more service activities for sightseeing and tourism will be opened in this Nature Reserve.

Preserving and promoting the value of natural resources is an important orientation to support tourism development. Clause 3, Article 10 of the Tourism Ordinance stipulates: “Tourism resources are natural landscapes, historical relics, revolutionary relics, and the creative labor process of humans that can be used to satisfy tourism needs, forming tourist attractions and tourist areas to create tourist attractions”. Thus, if we do a good job of preserving and promoting the value of cultural and natural heritage, we will contribute to preserving and promoting the value of tourism resources in Quang Binh province.
