Cha Quang Hill, also known as Ba Bay Hill, is located on the side of a hill on Highway 12A, in Y Leng village, Dan Hoa commune, Minh Hoa district, Quang Binh province. During the resistance war against the US, Cha Quang Hill was one of the most fiercely attacked targets of US air power.
This place has marked many heroic feats of the C759 Youth Volunteer Force established in the fight to protect the vital traffic route on the strategic support route 12A. This is also the place that witnessed the heroic sacrifice of 07 heroic C759 Youth Volunteer Force soldiers on 37/1966 while on duty to restore the road surface damaged by enemy bombs and bullets, which has gone down in national history as an immortal epic.
During the resistance war against the US, Highway 12A on the East-West route across the Truong Son mountain range was an important motor transport route, a strategic junction for transport and effective support for the battlefields in the South and neighboring Laos. Therefore, the US imperialists always focused on fierce bombing in order to cut off the support bloodline of our rear. To maintain this important bloodline, the C759 youth volunteer team consisting of young men and women from Tuyen Hoa district was established to reinforce the key bases on Highway 12A. After discovering this road, from August 1964, the enemy focused on fierce attacks from Khe Ve intersection to Mu Gia pass. A series of key points such as Khe Tang, Khe Ve, Bai Dinh, La Trong, Cong Troi, Mu Gia pass… were continuously bombed fiercely by the enemy. Each key point is like a resilient “battlefield”, marking the heroic feats of soldiers and youth volunteers participating in protecting the route.

Ms. Tran Thi Hue, former Squad Leader A7, C759, recounted that: on May 5 (lunar calendar) 1965, two hundred Youth Volunteers of Tuyen Hoa district (70 women) were organized into a company named C759, divided into 8 squads to supplement the force for construction site 12A. At this time, at construction site 12A, there were 500 workers in charge of traffic from Khe Ve intersection to Cong Troi, C759 was in charge of the 10km road from Khe Cay to Bai Dinh, every 1km there was a squad A guarding the post.
Comrade Pham Xuan Mai was assigned as Company Commander, Ms. Tran Thi Thanh as Party Cell Secretary, Ms. Tran Thi Hue as A7 Squad Leader, Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Hue as A6 Squad Leader. Although most of them were women, stationed in the “green jungle”, facing many difficulties and shortages, they still worked enthusiastically to complete their tasks excellently. Many heroic examples included carrying unexploded bombs and rolling them off the road like Mr. Tran Duc He, using their creative labor spirit like Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Hue and Ms. Tran Thi Thanh. With the slogan: “The enemy attacks the old forest, we go to the young forest; The enemy attacks the young forest, we go to the bare hills; The enemy attacks the bare hills, we stick to the road”, the Youth Volunteer Force and the soldiers did not fear hardships and dangers, overcoming the rain of bombs and bullets, fighting bravely to protect the entire route to promptly support the battlefield.

On July 3, 1966, the enemy sent many groups of planes to take turns bombing the Y Leng mountain area, at km 21 of Highway 12A. This is where Cha Quang hill was located, where the A2, 4, 6, 7 squads of C759 and the engineering soldiers were guarding the road. From 1:00 a.m. on July 3 to 12:00 noon the next day, American bombs and bullets continuously rained down on this hill area, causing thousands of cubic meters of earth and rock to collapse onto the road, burying the C759 Youth Volunteer Unit on duty at 10:00 p.m. on July 3, 1966. More than 50 C759 soldiers were injured and 11 engineering soldiers were killed and were taken out of the scene, while the remaining 07 bodies of the Youth Volunteers were buried in the collapsed earth and rock and could not be brought up.
The situation was extremely urgent, the road was blocked, causing many convoys to be congested. If we waited to retrieve the bodies of our comrades, the enemy would discover us and concentrate on attacking us, then the damage would be multiplied. And if we cleared the road, what would happen to our comrades’ bodies? It was very difficult to make a complete decision. In the end, we suppressed our grief for the sake of the frontline, “the blood of 759 can be shed but Road 759 cannot be blocked”, that was the determination and command from the hearts of the heroic boys and girls of C759. The entire unit turned grief into action, deciding to clear the road in the lingering pain and endless regret for the great sacrifice of our comrades. The road was cleared, each convoy headed straight to the battlefield, the soldiers in the unit continued to search for their comrades. The bodies of the Youth Volunteers were found one day, two days, three days, and some martyrs were found after 45 days. After this historic event, the TNXPC759 soldiers took July 3rd to name the hill where they fell. And from then on, Cha Quang hill had another name. “Three Seven Hill”.
In January 1967, at the National Youth Congress, the C759 Youth Volunteers Company of Quang Binh province was honored to be recognized as a heroic collective, in which Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Hue and her A6 Squad were awarded the title of Hero of the Transport Industry.
On May 7, 2009, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism issued Decision No. 1732/QD-BVHTTDL to rank Cha Quang Hill as a national historical relic. In 2010, the People’s Committee of Quang Binh province invested in building a memorial stele at the historical relic of Cha Quang Hill to pay tribute and commemorate the heroic martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the cause of national liberation and reunification.
Along with famous relics such as Khe Ve, Bai Dinh, La Trong, Cong Troi, Cha Lo, Mu Da Pass, Cha Quang Hill historical relic is always a “red address” on Highway 12A in the journey of visiting the old battlefield, paying tribute to comrades. At the same time, experience and explore the unique cultural features of the Bru-Van Kieu, Chut, May, Khua ethnic groups living here. Hopefully, in the future, Cha Quang Hill will be a destination for tourists when coming to Quang Binh Tourism.
