Dark Cave represents the geological formation about 400-500 million years ago. During the resistance war against the US to save the country, Dark Cave was used as a bomb shelter.

Where is Chay River and Dark Cave?

Chay River – Dark Cave is located in Bo Trach district, Quang Binh province. It is 75km northwest of Dong Hoi and about 3km from Thien Duong Cave. This attraction is currently managed by Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park. You can only get here by car or motorbike. Buses currently only run from Dong Hoi to Phong Nha. If you want to get here from Phong Nha, you must rent a tourist car in Phong Nha or join a tour.

Introduction to Chay River and Dark Cave

In 1992, the cave was discovered by the British Royal Cave Exploration Association and named Toi because of the dense darkness that covers every corner of the cave. The cave is 5,258m long, 80m high, 50m wide, including 2 entrances: the front entrance adjacent to the Chay River (30m high, more than 10m wide) and the back entrance adjacent to the forest (50m high, about 20m wide). In the cave, there are many stalactites with diverse shapes and colors. The old stalactites have turned color, some are lemon yellow, some are lime white, some are moss green. In particular, Toi Cave has stalactites with parasitic ferns living on them – a rare sight in other caves.

According to scientists, these stalactites are traces of a period of strong geological movements. Dark Cave also has underground rivers tens of meters deep, a natural freshwater lake named Thuy Tien and a mud lake about 20 square meters wide with essential minerals that are very good for human health. In addition, the Dark Cave area is also home to animals such as bats, swallows, etc., especially the Ha Tinh Langur – a primate species listed in the Vietnam Red Book.

Currently, this tourist attraction is managed by Phong Nha – Ke Bang Tourism Center. It is invested and exploited with many attractive services. From the Chay River animal observation station, visitors can experience the 400m long zipline service across the river to the front door of Dark Cave. After exploring and bathing in mud in the cave, visitors will kayak to explore Chay River. Then swing down the rope to bathe in the river and participate in many interesting water games.

What should you bring when traveling?

• You should prepare yourself a bikini for the Dark Cave mud bath.
• If you don’t want to take a mud bath in Hang Toi, you can wear whatever clothes you feel most comfortable in. But it’s best to wear swimming trunks for convenience when swinging and bathing in the stream.
• You should also prepare a towel to dry yourself after bathing in the stream. Of course, there will be one in the tourist area, but I think you should use your own towel.
• In addition, you should wear comfortable clothes, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
• Sandals are best because wearing shoes after bathing in the stream will be very uncomfortable. But it depends on your preference.

After buying your ticket to go through the gate, quickly change your clothes (choose appropriate clothes for each type of service). Get yourself a life jacket to hold in your hand.

Then you line up in the circle in order so that the tour guide can put on the Zipline for you, provide a headlamp, and a helmet. Note that you should test the light device to see if it is bright. Because the journey into the Dark Cave requires light.
