Let Quang Binh Travel introduce about Bau Sen
Freshwater lake in the sand area
Following National Highway 1A to the south of Le Thuy district, reaching Sen Thuy commune, you will encounter Bau Sen, a natural freshwater lake with a vast, clear water surface located close to the National Highway, with large sand dunes running along the coast to the east. In the past, Bau Sen was called Nhi Ho, referring to both lakes in the sand dunes area of Sen Thuy commune, namely Bau Sen in Thuy Lien Thuong and Bau Dom in Thuy Lien Nam, connected by a small creek.

The lake’s surface area is about 8.5 km2, with a water capacity of about 5 million m3. Many people believe that the lake is called Bau Sen because in the past, there were many lotuses growing in this lake. In the past, every summer, lotuses bloomed all over the lake, and the fragrance filled the whole area. There are quite interesting legends about Bau Sen. According to Dai Viet Su Ky Toan Thu, in the year Giap Than (1404), Ho Han Thuong ordered the digging of the Sen canal to facilitate the transport of military provisions to Thuan Hoa, but “the mud and sand piled up, and it could not be dug”.
The vestiges of the Sen canal start from Loc Binh, go around the road, go into Quan Cat, connect to Bau Sen, flow through Quan But, Ha Co (bordering Quang Tri), then flow to the East, then turn to the West. When digging to a sandbank west of the village, the sand piled up and could not be dug (the villagers called this area Quan Cut or Bau Diem Vuong), so the Ho Dynasty had to give up.

When the king returned from fighting Champa, 20 elephants stopped at the canal bank, refused to cross, and laid their tusks on the ground while roaring. The people in the area thought that Mai Van Ban was wrongly accused, so the king secretly sent someone to pray and say: “If Van Ban is sacred, let the elephants cross the river, and I will confer a title on him.” After praying, the elephants crossed the river.
The King appointed Van Ban as the local god and ordered the construction of a temple, which is Mai Cong Temple, as recorded in history books. Today, when coming to Bau Sen, visitors can take a boat ride to enjoy the natural scenery, breathe the fresh air and indulge in the pleasure of fishing.
In Bau Sen water body, there are many freshwater aquatic species living, but the most abundant are still carp species and shrimps. This is one of the places with freshwater aquatic resources providing fresh food for a rural area in the South of Le Thuy district, which has arid land conditions…
Many restaurants serve tourists at Bau Sen
With its special geographical location on the North-South highway, Bau Sen has become a stopover for tourists who want to rest and eat. Bau Sen is famous for its chicken rice and fish porridge. So when you set foot or pass by here, don’t forget to come to Bau Sen to enjoy the typical dishes here.
Currently, Bau Sen tourism services are not many and are still limited, however, with its wild features and fresh food, it will satisfy gourmet diners.
Awakening the tourism potential of Bau Sen Le Thuy
Bau Sen today has become an ideal resting place for tourists from all over the world. In addition to the specialties of freshwater fish caught in the lake, there are also culinary dishes from very typical food sources of Le Thuy countryside, such as: chicken rice, snakehead fish soup, steamed fish, fish porridge…, enough to attract tourists passing by this land.

Along with famous historical-cultural relics such as Hoang Phuc Pagoda in My Thuy, An Xa Pagoda (Loc Thuy), the tomb of Founding Minister, Le Thanh Hau Nguyen Huu Canh (Truong Thuy), the memorial house of General Vo Nguyen Giap (An Xa, Loc Thuy)… the land of “spiritual land and talented people” Le Thuy is also blessed by nature with wild and majestic natural beauty such as: primeval forest, Bang mineral spring, Tan Hai beach, Nuoc Lanh stream, Dai Tuong cave, Cha Loi Cave, An Ma Lake and cannot fail to mention Bau Sen.
Hopefully, in the near future, Bau Sen will be invested in and built, becoming an extremely ideal eco-tourism and resort destination, creating a driving force to promote the development of Sen Thuy commune in particular, and Le Thuy district in general. There is a Bau Sen that is covered in morning mist and afternoon sunlight day and night. We invite you to Bau Sen to enjoy the beauty of this pristine land tinged with legend.
