If Hanoi has the Red River, Nghe An has the Lam River, Ha Tinh has the La River… then when you come to Quang Binh, you will know about the Nhat Le River. The Nhat Le River, along with the Gianh, Hoanh Son, and Deo Ngang rivers, are famous places in Quang Binh province in the historical and cultural flow of the Vietnamese people. A river associated with fierce wars, countless bombs and bullets lie quietly under the river, countless soldiers have fallen here to protect the Fatherland, for national independence.

A few words about Nhat Le River
Where does Nhat Le River originate?
Originating from the U Bo and Co Roi mountains of the Truong Son range, the Nhat Le River flows into the East Sea at the Nhat Le estuary. The Nhat Le River has a total length of 85 km and consists of two main branches: the Long Dai River (or Dai Giang) flowing through Quang Ninh district and the Kien Giang River flowing through Le Thuy district, meeting at Trung Quan.
Seen from above, the Nhat Le River looks like a long, shimmering silk strip winding around and embracing the entire city of Dong Hoi, with bustling boats going back and forth.
Why is it called Nhat Le River?
According to legend, myth
Many legends and myths have been woven to decode the name “Nhat Le” with many predestined relationships. Some people cite the story of the princess My E of the king of Champa Xa Dau drowning herself in the river to keep her chastity after King Ly Thai Tong personally led troops to conquer Champa in 1044.
Later, the retired Emperor Tran Nhan Tong promised to marry Princess Huyen Tran to be the queen of Champa and the political marriage brought back to Dai Viet the two Chau O and Ly, but on the journey to become a bride in a foreign land, how many times did the princess’s tears silently fall into the river mouth?… Feeling sorry for the beautiful woman of the two countries who silently shed tears of sadness, the ancients named the river Nhat Le (!)
According to Chinese characters
According to the meaning of Chinese characters, “nhat” means day, “le” means something that is repeated many times to become a habit and “Nhat Le” means that every day there is the same flow of water, referring to the Nhat Le River. Some people also understand “le” to mean “beautiful” because nature has created a rare beauty here and today, with the construction of human hands, on the banks of Nhat Le, there is a sparkling young city…
According to oral history
Many people believe that during the Trinh – Nguyen conflict (1570 – 1786), when the Gianh River became the boundary between the two sides of the battle line, the migrants on the southern bank often turned to the northern bank, missing their homeland and tears fell. Over time, the tears flowed into a river and from the river flowed out to the sea, becoming the name Nhat Le (!).
Historical achievements recorded on Nhat Le River
According to historical records, the name of the river “Nhat Le” dates back to the Ly Dynasty and was changed from the old name Dai Uyen (around 1069 – 1075). Nhat Le Gate also has other names such as Tru Nha, Ha Cu, Sai Gate…, it is a type of sloping gate that is not wide, not deep, the water flows evenly, convenient for medium and small boats to enter and anchor.
During the Trinh-Nguyen war, the Trinh army dominated from Ngang Pass to the north bank of Gianh River. The south bank of Gianh River to Nhat Le River was the defense line of the Nguyen army with solid ramparts built by Dao Duy Tu, famous as the 18 km long Luy Thay, the 10 km long Truong Duc. Currently, the relics of Luy Thay, Quang Binh Quan, the citadels of the Trinh-Nguyen period are still preserved.

During the Vietnam War (1954-1975), the US Air Force bombed North Vietnam, the most fierce war was in Quang Binh province – the key supply point at that time. Famous fierce key points, with many war relics here, include: Long Dai ferry (now Long Dai bridge), Xuan Son ferry, Gianh river ferry (Gianh river bridge), Ngang pass, National Highway 1, Road 15, Road 559 system (Truong Son road, Ho Chi Minh trail), Dong Hoi city, Nhat Le seaport.
Nhat Le River – a witness of a time of family separation is also a place of reunion of a Central region homeland. The river is like a mother who accepts tears and all the solemn parts of history. It is blending with the indomitable will of the nation, flowing with Nhat Le River towards the vast ocean.
