Mother Suot Monument on Nhat Le River

The Mother Suot Monument on the Nhat Le River is a tourist destination in the city tour of Dong Hoi City. The heroic mother Nguyen Thi Suot, we often affectionately call her mother Suot, was born in 1906 in Bao Ninh, Quang Binh Province. During the years when the American invaders escalated the war, fiercely bombarding traffic routes and ferry terminals, especially on the Nhat Le River, considered the lifeblood of Quang Binh and the Central region, there, Mother Suot bravely rowed a boat to transport soldiers, weapons, and necessary goods from the North bank to the South bank.

It is estimated that every year, Mother’s ferry made 1,400 trips back and forth. On October 13, 1968, during a brutal bombing by American planes, Mother fell down on her brave oars. Before that, in 1967, Mother was awarded the title of Hero of the Armed Forces by our State.

The story of Suot’s mother

In 1964, after the Gulf of Tonkin incident, the US began to send troops to attack the North. Quang Binh was one of the main targets of US aircraft and naval attacks, with the aim of preventing the North from supporting the revolutionary forces in the South. At that time, my mother was 60 years old but still volunteered to row a boat to transport cadres, wounded soldiers and weapons across the river, maintaining communication between the two banks. Since then, during the years 1964 – 1966, my mother still kept her duty, rowing hundreds of trips even when US aircraft were bombing fiercely. My mother was called by the cadres and people by the familiar name of Mother Suot. In total, it is estimated that every year, Mother Suot made 1,400 trips back and forth.

In the 1966 National Heroes and Emulation Fighters Congress held in the North, Suot’s mother was invited to attend. On January 1, 1967, she was awarded the title of Hero of the Transport Industry in the fight against the Americans to save the country. At the end of 1968, when the war became more fierce, she stopped her job as a ferryman and moved to higher ground. On October 11, 1968, while at Bao Ninh ferry, Nguyen Thi Suot’s mother died in a cluster bomb attack by the Americans.

Mother Nguyen Thi Suot in Quang Binh became a touching and generous subject for many literary and artistic works, about a common woman, a mother with only a paddle and a patriotic heart, loving her family but determined to fight to the death with the enemy, leaving behind an everlasting reputation. A typical and early appearance is the poem “Mother Suot”, written on January 4, 1965 by the great poet To Huu, who was considered by Professor Ha Minh Duc to “successfully describe the image of a mother in modern Vietnamese poetry”:

“Gan chi gan rứa mẹ nờ?
Mẹ rằng: Cứu nước mình chờ chi ai
Chẳng bằng con gái con trai
Sáu mươi còn một chút tài đò đưa
Tàu bay hắn bắn sớm trưa
Thì tui cứ việc nắng mưa đưa đò!”

In 2003, on the occasion of the National Day celebration on September 2, the Suot Mother Statue and the memorial complex were inaugurated. The statue is 7m high (including the pedestal), its face facing the Nhat Le River, more than 50m from the old ferry.
