The name Vung Chua Yen Island was born from the characteristics associated with this place. Because it is located between three large islands, and there is an extremely sacred ancient pagoda, the locals called this place Vung Chua. Before 2013, Vung Chua Yen Island, Quang Binh was still a rather unfamiliar place, but when General Vo Nguyen Giap passed away and chose this place as his final resting place, Vung Chua became a spiritual tourist destination that Vietnamese people long to visit once a year.
Leaning against the Hoanh Son mountain range, facing the vast East Sea, the General’s tomb lies in a simple, peaceful area, in harmony with the sky and earth. There are no massive monuments, no lavish architecture, only mountain rocks, forest trees, and blue sea – just like the wish “to lie near mother, in the midst of the homeland”.
Visitors here all maintain a solemn and respectful attitude. They come not only to offer incense in memory of a great man, but also to feel a part of the General’s temperament – simple, noble, living for the people and for the country.
About 27 km south of Vung Chua – Yen Island, the communal house is located in the center of Thuan Bai village, right at the foot of the bridge north of Gianh river, in Quang Thuan commune, Ba Don town. The communal house was built to commemorate the merits of the founder of this village. This is also an attractive historical, cultural and spiritual relic. Coming here, visitors will be immersed in the natural scenery on the poetic Gianh river, and participate in annual festivals.

On November 14, 1972, American bombs hit Road20, where a youth volunteer team and an artillery squad were stationed.
The youth volunteer team consisted of 8 people, 4 men and 4 women. The oldest man was 37 years old at that time, and the remaining 7 people were between 18 and 20 years old. To avoid American bombs, the 8 people took shelter in a mountain cave right next to the road.
At that time, the sky of Road 20 seemed to be shattered by the roar of aircraft engines and bombings. Not only was Road 20 torn apart, but even the surrounding mountains were shaken by the bombs. When the smoke and dust cleared, other units fighting nearby were shocked to realize that the entrance to Tam Co Cave had been sealed by a giant rock weighing hundreds of tons. When they arrived, they could only hear the faint cries for help from their comrades behind the rock. The rock had separated the outside from the inside. Those outside found the cave after the bombing, but could not open the way in. The rock was too big.
They could only use long bamboo sticks through a gap to bring drinking water and dry food to the people inside the cave. Every time a vehicle passed by, people tried to find a way, even using dynamite to break the rocks, but to no avail. After 9 days, people outside could no longer hear the cries inside. It was not until 1996, when a road was built here, that the remains of 8 martyrs were brought out of the fateful cave. They were buried together with 5 anti-aircraft artillery soldiers who died in the same bombing on November 14, 1972.

Mr. Vo Dai Ham, 82 years old (his nephew calls the General “uncle”) is the person that General Vo Nguyen Giap trusted to manage and look after the General Vo Nguyen Giap Memorial House for over 45 years. Talking to us, Mr. Vo Dai Ham said: “The Memorial House is always open, serving compatriots, soldiers nationwide and foreign tourists to visit; it is most crowded during holidays, New Year, and commemorating important events of the country. After offering incense to the General and visiting the Memorial House, visitors often stay to listen and learn more about everyday stories and childhood memories of the General.”
The memorial house of General Vo Nguyen Giap is located in a garden of about 2,500 square meters. Behind the house, there are many fruit trees such as peach, apple, star apple, bitter ginseng and many other fruit trees planted by compatriots and soldiers nationwide or planted by the General himself during his visits to his hometown.
In this wooden house, the middle room is where the ancestral altar is placed. At the top are the pictures of the General’s parents, Vo Quang Nghiem and Nguyen Thi Kien. At the outermost is the altar with the statue and portrait of the General. The remaining rooms are the family living room, the reading room and display some photos of General Vo Nguyen Giap’s activities. In the house, there are also many family items such as cabinets, tables, beds, chests, plows, hoes, shovels, jars, pots… which have been carefully preserved until today.
The monument was built right in the center of the ferry named after Suot’s mother, honoring the brave woman who ferryed the ferry in the past. This is a place for cultural exchange and activities of the indigenous people, often organizing dance and singing festivals, and entertainment for children. After offering incense to visit the Mother Suot monument, visitors can visit Bao Ninh fishing village and Nhat Le beach.
This relic is located right on the village road in Minh Le village, Quang Minh commune, Quang Trach, about 6 km southwest of Ba Don town. Minh Le communal house has the appearance of an ancient communal house with the image of two dragons stylized with flowers and leaves and quite eye-catching carvings. This communal house is not only a place to worship the ancestors, the tutelary god of the Truong family in Bac Ninh who came to open up the village, but also a historical relic during the resistance wars.
Non Pagoda Than Dinh pagoda is located in Rao Da village, Truong Xuan, Quang Ninh district, about 25 km southwest of Dong Hoi city. This place is known as a “place of many Buddhas” with the Fairy Well located right in front of the temple gate with clear, cool water and a sweet taste. The temple attracts many visitors to burn incense, pray, and drink fairy water to pray for peace and health. Hoang Phuc Pagoda is located on a high land, nearly 10,000m2 wide, on the right bank of Kien Giang River. From the center of Quang Binh city, visitors can follow National Highway 1A to the South, then turn onto DT16 to Kien Giang town, travel a little further to reach Hoang Phuc Pagoda.
