From a general perspective, the mountain peak looks like the head and trunk of an elephant Mep on the top of a high mountain. As the highest mountain peak in Quang Tri province, it is known as the “roof of Quang Tri”.

Legend has it that more than a century ago, King Ham Nghi and his entourage passed through this mountainous region during the resistance war against the French – leaving a historical mark and pride in the minds of the local people. At the foot of Pa Thien – Voi Mep is a village of the Van Kieu people, where many unique traditional festivals are still preserved such as the New Rice Celebration, Piec Xa Ro Festival, Ra Pup Festival; along with folk musical instruments such as drums, gongs, cymbals, panpipes, sao khui, A Mam panpipes… and folk melodies such as Ta oai + xa not + oat…
