13:35 - 16.09.2024
Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park is a convergence of many rare animals and plants along with geological, geomorphological characteristics and biological diversity. In particular, in Phong Nha – Ke Bang there is a tropical evergreen closed forest on limestone mountains. This is the most unique forest type in Vietnam and the world, in which the Green Cypress forest is identified as a new species, endemic on limestone mountains and is considered the only forest type in the world.

Bach Xanh is a rare and only tree in Vietnam that still exists on limestone mountains.
Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park Reserve has 6 types of ecosystems, including: limestone mountain forest ecosystem, soil mountain forest ecosystem, cave ecosystem, underground river ecosystem, lake ecosystem and stream ecosystem. This is the reserve with the largest coverage and primary forest ratio among the nature reserves in Vietnam. Forest coverage reaches 96.2% of the area, of which 95% of the area is the typical remaining tropical forest ecosystem on limestone mountains.
The Bach Xanh forest population was discovered by Professor Leonid Avereyanov (Khamarop Botanical Institute – Russia), Professor Phan Ke Loc (Vietnam Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources) and a number of staff from the Center for Scientific Research and Rescue of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park.
With an existence of more than 500 years, the Green Cypress forest is attracting the attention and interest of many domestic and international scientists.
Bach Xanh Forest with the scientific name Calocedrus rupestris, belongs to the Cupressaceae family. In Phong Nha – Ke Bang, these are endemic forests distributed only on limestone mountains, with a distribution range of more than 2,400 hectares, at an altitude of 700m to 1,000m. Currently, there are Green Cypress trees that are 500 years old and 20m to 30m high. According to scientists, Green Cypress is a rare and unique tree species in Vietnam that still exists on limestone mountains, and this is also a tree species at risk of extinction in the world.
Standing on the high mountain, visitors can see the globally valuable Green Cypress forest, and feel the beauty of the tree trunks with many marks of time on their rough bark.
A reporter from Heritage Magazine named Thai A had the opportunity to visit Bach Xanh forest and shared: “I did not expect that in the middle of Truong Son forest in Quang Binh land, there still exists such a beautiful primeval forest. The journey to this forest is not simple at all, because it is very arduous; but after the journey, I found unique biological values that are probably the only ones left here. As a journalist myself, I hope that together with other colleagues, through radio stations and newspapers, we can bring to international friends and readers more information about a new beauty of Quang Binh, in addition to what we already know such as the Phong Nha – Ke Bang cave system”.
If you have a chance to experience the Bach Xanh primeval forest, you will understand more about the habitat value of Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park; this place will also bring unforgettable memories to those who love to learn and explore. The mystery of creation is only revealed to those who love nature and want to experience the wonders of Phong Nha – Ke Bang.
