Where is Phong Nha cave?
Located in Son Trach commune, Bo Trach district, Quang Binh province, about 45km northwest of Dong Hoi city, Phong Nha Cave is located in Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park. From Dong Hoi to Phong Nha, visitors will travel on the legendary Truong Son road. After arriving at Phong Nha tourist center, visitors go upstream along the Son River to visit Phong Nha. Considered the “Thien Nam De Nhat Dong” of Vietnam, protected by tropical forests. It is the first place put into tourism exploitation to serve visitors in Phong Nha Ke Bang.

The name “Phong Nha”
People often call it Phong Nha Ke Bang Cave. The name of Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park also comes from the name Phong Nha Cave. However, Phong Nha Cave is just a cave like many other caves in Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park.


According to scientists, the weathering process that created the caves in Phong Nha is a natural process that took place 250 million years ago. The main terrain of Phong Nha – Ke Bang is limestone mountains and dirt mountains. The average height is 600 meters, with narrow walls and vertical cliffs. Phong Nha Cave is located in the southeast of Ke Bang limestone massif. In a strongly weathered limestone area, about 10,000 km2 in area, stretching 200 km north of the Truong Son range, even to Laos. In this limestone massif, there is a phenomenon of underground water flow.

The visible streams on the surface are the Son, Trooc, Chay, and Rao Thuong rivers originating from small streams. When reaching En Cave, the large streams flow underground into the limestone mountains to form caves. On both sides of the Son River is the life of the local people here. The people around here often drive boats to serve tourists visiting Phong Nha Ke Bang.

Phong Nha – wind through teeth
With a length of 7,729m, a depth of 83m, a height of 50m with many large and small branches. Including Bi Ki cave, Tien cave and Cung Dinh cave. This is a type of underground water cave in the mountain with many typical stalactites. Legend has it that the stalagmites hanging down at the cave entrance contributed to the poetic name “Phong Nha”, which means “Wind through the teeth”. The name Phong Nha also originates from here. Phong Nha stalactites are considered beautiful and took millions of years to form.


Unique stalactites in the cave
Phong Nha is famous for its unique rock formations named after their natural shapes. It feels like entering a fairyland, such as “Lion”, “Unicorn”, “Vo Chau”, “Cung Dinh” or “Buddha Statue”. After about 19km flowing underground under the Truong Son mountain range. The river appears at the cave entrance with a blue water color in the dry season. And especially the red color of alluvium in the rainy season. Visitors can also explore the formation of stalagmites and stalactites in some of the 14 rooms inside the cave. About 1km inside is Bi Ki cave, a branch deep inside the cave about 600m from the cave entrance. It is believed that sometime from the 9th to the 11th century, the Cham people chose this place as a place of worship.
