Where is the Mother Suot Monument?

Located on Quach Xuan Ky Street, Dong Hoi City, Quang Binh Province. The Mother Suot Monument represents the bravery and testimony to a glorious history located on the Nhat Le River ferry. The monument is located about 1km from Nhat Le Bridge. Located right next to the Nhat Le River.

Inaugurated in 2003, the Mother Suot Monument was designed by sculptor Phan Dinh Tien, with a height of 7m including the pedestal. The statue depicts the image of Mother Suot facing the Nhat Le River with eyes filled with a burning desire to contribute more to the country and the people.

The story of Mother Suot

Origin, family background

Mother Suot, whose real name is Nguyen Thi Suot, was a woman who drove a ferry carrying soldiers, wounded soldiers, and ammunition across the Nhat Le River during the 1964-1967 resistance war.

Mother was born in 1908 in Van Chai Lang hamlet, Phu My, now My Canh village, Bao Ninh commune, Dong Hoi city, Quang Binh province. Due to the family’s poverty, her parents went fishing to earn a living, so from a young age, Mother Suot had to stay at someone else’s house to earn money to help her parents, working for hire all year round but still suffering. It was not until 1945 that her mother got married and worked as a boat rower to make a living.

Her contribution to the revolution

In 1964, the invading US Army began to attack the North, in which Quang Binh was one of the key targets of the US Navy, because this was a key point, a large rear base of the North supporting the front line in the South.

At that time, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Suot was also about 58 years old but she refused to evacuate and volunteered to take the job of rowing a boat to transport cadres, wounded soldiers and weapons across the river, maintaining communication between the two banks of the river. The job seemed normal but was extremely dangerous.

Since then, during the 4 years from 1964 to 1967, she rowed thousands of boats despite the rain of bombs from American planes, despite the sun, rain, wind and storms, not afraid of the night to promptly transport and support our front line. She was affectionately called Mother Suot by the soldiers and the people here.

The titles she was awarded by the state.

In 1966, Suot mother was invited to attend the National Congress of Heroes and Emulation Fighters held in Hanoi.

On January 1, 1967, mother was awarded the title “Hero of the Transport Industry in the Resistance War against America to Save the Country”.

On October 11, 1968, like every other day on duty, Suot’s mother heroically sacrificed herself in a bomb attack by the enemy.

In 1980, Dong Hoi People’s Committee erected a monument to Mother Suot in the center of the ferry wharf.

Mother Suot has become a new subject with an endless source of inspiration for countless literary and artistic works, about a woman, a Vietnamese mother, with only a paddle and patriotism, determined to survive the enemy.
