Quang Binh Tourism – Tam Toa Church

Tam Toa Church is a Catholic church located on Nguyen Du Street, Dong My Ward, Dong Hoi City, Quang Binh Province. The church was built in 1886. This is a tourist destination in the Dong Hoi city tour program. Introduction to Tam Toa Church.

Han Mac Tu was baptized here in 1912 with the Christian name of Franois Nguyen Trong Tri. During the 8 years from 1964 to 1972, the US Air Force bombed North Vietnam, Dong Hoi was leveled, Tam Toa Church was also bombed, only the bell tower remained. After the Geneva Accords in 1954, the entire Tam Toa parish migrated to the South. Since then, the church has been abandoned.

During the Vietnam War, Tam Toa Church was bombed 48 times by the US Air Force. On February 11, 1965, the church was destroyed by a bomb, leaving only the bell tower with many bullet holes.

Dong Hoi town was flattened by American bombs, the church bell tower became a war relic. On February 26, 1997, the People’s Committee of Quang Binh province issued Decision No. 143/QD-UB to turn the Tam Toa church bell tower area into a War Crimes Relic Site and a provincial-level cultural and historical relic that needs to be strictly protected.
On October 23, 2008, the People’s Committee of Quang Binh province and the Xa Doai Bishop’s Office agreed and signed a memorandum of understanding with the following content: “The old Tam Toa church grounds are now evidence of war crimes. The two sides will preserve and restore them to protect them as well as serve the research and education of traditions for the younger generation…

Currently, Tam Toa parishioners and the parish priest have started construction of a new church on Thong Nhat Street, Nam Ly Ward, Dong Hoi City. The building is 43m long, 16m wide and has a twin tower 35m high, designed in Gothic architecture, with 2 floors: the upper floor is for worship, and the lower floor serves the parish’s community activities.
